Tracing Terruño is multidisciplinary artist Muriel Hasbun’s (b. 1961) first comprehensive survey in New York. From her earliest work in the late 1980s to the present, Hasbun has developed a uniquely poetic and abstracted sensibility that she employs to explore identity and memory through photography, video, and installation. Born in El Salvador, Hasbun—the descendant of Salvadoran and Palestinian Christians on her paternal side and Polish and French Jews on her maternal side—left her home country in 1979 at the start of the Salvadoran Civil War. First moving to France and then to the United States to study, she ultimately settled in Washington D.C., in 1980 where she has since worked as an artist and professor of photography.
Experimenting with a wide range of materials and photographic processes—including chemigrams, multiple exposure, archival documents, and video—Hasbun recounts her family’s experience with dislocation over the course of the twentieth century, exploring exile and loss. Gathered from several series from throughout her career, the exhibition explores her personal narrative as well as collective histories, and the impact of war and genocide across generations. In a moment when environmental and political crises are causing a rise in mass migration, the title Tracing Terruño, a reference to the Spanish term for land or soil, frames the exhibition as an act of mapping, layering the diverse ways Hasbun has reflected on her sense of home, geography, borders, and place over thirty-five years of creative practice.
